Abstract<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n The millennial kingdom in the\nRevelation of John raises many questions. The history of interpretation gives\ndifferent and disparate answers on central questions: Why is this earthly\nkingdom of peace necessary at all before the coming of the heavenly Jerusalem?\nHow should the period of thousand years be understood: chronologically or\nmetaphorically? The article offers an interpretation of Rev. 20:1\u201410 and a\nfresh understanding of the imagery of the apocalypse and the meaning of the\nmillennial kingdom. John connects two different traditions and Jewish\nexpectations: a national-earthly and a universal-heavenly reign. The\nrealization of a period of peace on earth illustrates the goodness and the\npurpose of creation.
